The brown dipper, also known as Pallas's, Asian or Asiatic dipper, is an aquatic songbird of the mountains of the east Palearctic, and at 22 cm and 87 g the largest of the dippers. It is thrush-like with a cocked tail and chocolate-brown plumage, the back and breast slightly lighter. It can feed by diving into streams for larger benthic organisms, or wade in shallower parts of streams and pick smaller organisms from the bottom (Wikipedia, general species account).
Diving for large food is necessary in the breeding season, when more food is needed, whereas adults forage by wading and picking at the stream bottom for the rest of the year; chicks and fledglings also forage by diving (Wikipedia, general species account).
