The brown-headed barbet is a large barbet about 27cm long, with a big head, short neck and short tail. The head, neck and breast are brown with fine streaks, there is a bare yellow patch around the eye, and the rest of the plumage is green. Its call is a repetitive kutroo, kutroo, kutroo, and when one bird starts others take it up; it is silent in winter. Pairs also communicate with soft kura, kura calls (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is an arboreal bird of gardens and wooded country, including town and city parks, and tends to avoid heavy forest. It is fairly tolerant of people. It eats fruit and insects, feeding on mangoes, jackfruit, papaya, bananas, figs and other cultivated fruit trees. It nests in a tree hole, which it often excavates itself, and both sexes incubate the two to four eggs (Wikipedia, general species account).
