Recorded as widespread in South and central India
The flat-haired mouse, or Indian brown spiny mouse, is a rodent in the mouse family. The source opened for it says it is found only in India, where it is widely distributed through South and central India. A local Tamil name, kall-eli, means stone rat, and the animal has been noted arranging pebbles around its burrow entrances (Wikipedia, general species account).
This pebble behaviour may help deter predators and stabilise the burrow's microclimate, and some chambers are lined with stones that seem to serve as bedding. Because that account places the species only in India, its inclusion in Nepal's guide is unconfirmed and flagged for checking. Nationally Data Deficient (Nepal National Red List 2011).
