The greater sand plover is a long-legged, thick-billed plover, 19 to 22cm long, slightly larger than a common ringed plover. Breeding males have a sandy-buff back, white underparts, variable orange on the breast, forehead and nape and a black eye mask; females are duller and greyer, and winter and young birds browner. The legs are greenish-yellow and the bill black, and the flight call is a soft trill (Wikipedia, general species account).
It breeds in semi-deserts from Turkey east through Central Asia, nesting in a scrape on bare ground, and is strongly migratory, wintering on sandy beaches in East Africa, South Asia and Australasia. It was described by Rene Lesson in 1826 and has three subspecies. The source does not name Nepal (Wikipedia, general species account).
