The Himalayan flameback, or Himalayan goldenback, is very similar in appearance to the greater flameback but not closely related to it, and is smaller with a smaller bill. It can be told by its black hind neck and the brownish centre of the throat, which may extend down the breast on some birds and is bordered by irregular black spotting. It has reddish or brown eyes and three toes (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is not threatened, but deforestation could severely affect its population, and very little is known of it and more fieldwork is needed. Its call is a series of rapidly repeated klak-klak-klak-klak, slower and softer than the greater flameback's. It mainly flocks and feeds with other birds such as the greater flameback, and its prey is assumed to be insects, as in other woodpeckers. The clutch is two or three eggs (Wikipedia, general species account).
