The Himalayan pika is now treated as part of Royle's pika, Ochotona roylii, also called the Himalayan hare. It is a solitary pika 17 to 22cm long with a slightly arched head, a reddish-grey body and a chestnut head. It lives on open rocky slopes and in conifer, pine, deodar and rhododendron forest, sometimes near people (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is mostly active at dawn and dusk, avoiding midday heat, and unlike other pikas rarely builds hay piles. Density is low, about 12.5 to 16.2 per hectare in parts of the Himalaya. Ogilby described it in 1839, and it occurs in Bhutan, China, India, Nepal and Pakistan (Wikipedia, general species account).
