The rain quail, or black-breasted quail, is a small quail 15 to 17cm long, weighing roughly 64 to 71g. The male has a black breast patch and a distinctive black-and-white head pattern. The female is hard to tell from female common and Japanese quail, though her breast spots are more delicate. Its call is a metallic, repeated pair of notes given morning and evening (Wikipedia, general species account).
Its range includes Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, in grassland, cropped fields and scrub across the Indus valley, the Gangetic plains and parts of peninsular India. Eggs are laid in a scrape on the ground, sometimes in the open under a bush; there are usually six to eight, incubated for 16 to 18 days.
