The rufous-necked laughingthrush is a mostly grey laughingthrush, 22 to 27cm long and weighing 51 to 73g, with a black face and a reddish neck. It resembles the rufous-cheeked laughingthrush. It lives in moist lowland and montane forest from Nepal into China and Myanmar, and in Bangladesh, Bhutan and India, with some isolated populations in Nepal (Wikipedia, general species account).
It does not migrate, and is heard making rambling chirps and quick whip calls, often in feeding flocks. It eats mainly insects but also seeds, molluscs and berries, and breeds from March to August, building small cup nests of leaves and grasses. Breeding is little studied, and females may favour larger, better-defending males. A 2018 study moved it to the genus Pterorhinus (Wikipedia, general species account).
