Baer's pochard is a diving duck of eastern Asia, 41 to 47cm long with a wingspan of 70 to 79cm. The breeding male has a black head and neck with a green gloss, a white or pale yellow eye, a blackish-brown back, a dark chestnut breast and white or light chestnut flanks. In poor light it may look completely black. It is close to the ferruginous duck but larger, with white flanks when floating (Wikipedia, general species account).
It breeds in North and Central China and formerly bred in south-east Russia, wintering in many countries including Nepal. The nest is built of sedges and reeds among emergent vegetation, usually in shallow water or on islands, with five to fourteen eggs incubated for 23 to 26 days. Hunting and habitat loss are given as the main reasons for its decline.
