Habitat
Himalayan forest, mostly 1,500–3,000m; recorded down to 800m
Range
Central and eastern Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, northern West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh
The Bhutan giant flying squirrel is one of the largest flying squirrels. It is also called Gray's or the noble giant flying squirrel, and lives in Himalayan forests. It was long confused with Hodgson's giant flying squirrel, and only in the late 1970s and early 1980s was it firmly established that the two differ in colour pattern and size (Wikipedia, general species account).
Its range is narrow in the Himalayas, restricted to central and eastern Nepal, Bhutan and the Indian states of Sikkim, far northern West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh. It is mostly found between 1,500 and 3,000m but has been recorded as low as 800m. Like other flying squirrels it is mainly nocturnal and glides between trees on its patagium, though it has been seen at dawn and dusk. Nationally Data Deficient (Nepal National Red List 2011).
