The black-crested bulbul is 18.5 to 19.5cm long, with a black head and a distinct crest, a yellow iris, greenish-yellow upperparts, yellow underparts, a greenish-black tail and a black bill and feet. The sexes look alike and young birds are slightly duller; the form johnsoni has a red throat (Wikipedia, general species account).
It lives in forest and dense scrub, eating fruit and insects, and nests in a bush, typically laying two to four eggs. The nominate form is found in Nepal, northern and eastern India and southern China, and eight subspecies are recognised. Until 2008 it was treated as the same species as several related bulbuls, and it was moved to the genus Rubigula after molecular studies (Wikipedia, general species account).
