The red-vented bulbul is a bulbul about 20cm long with a short crest that gives the head a squarish look. The body is dark brown with a scaly pattern, the head darker or black, the rump white and the vent red, and the long black tail is tipped white. Himalayan races have a more prominent crest and more streaked underparts, one having a black hood reaching the mid-breast, and the desert race has a paler back (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is a bird of dry scrub, open forest, plains and cultivated land and is rarely found in mature forest in its native range. It has been introduced to many other parts of the world, including Argentina, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, the USA and the Cook Islands, and is listed among the world's 100 worst invasive alien species; New Zealand eradicated it in 1955. Its type locality was once wrongly given as the Cape of Good Hope (Wikipedia, general species account).
