The crested goshawk is a forest hawk, 30 to 46cm long, with females much larger than males. Males have a dark brown crown, grey head sides and black moustachial and throat stripes, females a browner head, and a short crest shows in profile. It is secretive, surprising birds, mammals and reptiles by flying from a perch, and its flight alternates slow wingbeats with a straight glide (Wikipedia, general species account).
It builds a stick nest in a tree and lays two or three eggs. It is resident across tropical Asia from India and Sri Lanka to southern China, Indonesia, Taiwan and the Philippines, mainly in lowland tropical and warm subtropical forest, and in Malaysia and Singapore it is increasingly using urban areas. The source mentions the foothills of the Himalaya in Bhutan but not Nepal. It was formerly placed in Accipiter and has eleven subspecies (Wikipedia, general species account).
