The greater false vampire bat is 6.5 to 9.5cm long, weighs 40 to 60g and has an average forearm of 6.5 to 7.2cm. It has large ears, no tail, blue-grey fur with brownish underparts and an erect noseleaf of about 10mm. It is strongly carnivorous, eating other bats, birds, reptiles, fish and insects (Wikipedia, general species account).
It occurs in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. About 85% of prey is taken on low searching flights, and it also hunts from a perch. Gestation lasts 150 to 160 days, and one or two pups are born and nursed for two to three months. Nepal's 2011 list has no matching entry, so no national status is given.
