The jungle bush-quail is a small quail 15 to 18cm long, weighing 57 to 82g, with clear differences between the sexes. Males have brown upperparts with blackish and buff markings, whitish underparts barred in black, and a mainly dark reddish-brown face with a buffy-white moustache. Females have a similar pattern but pinkish-brown underparts, more uniform wings and a duller moustache (Wikipedia, general species account).

It lives in dry areas with shrubby or rocky cover and feeds on seeds and small insects. It nests in shallow scrapes in cover and lays four to eight eggs, incubated only by the female. It has been reported from Nepal but has not been recorded there since the 19th century, so it should not be expected, and it is possibly a migrant there. Its main range is peninsular India.
