The slaty-headed parakeet has a dark slate-grey head with a light blue tint where the head meets the neck. Males have long central tail feathers, shorter in females, and the tail is green at the base, becoming deep blue and widely tipped with bright yellow. The upper mandible is bright red-orange and the lower pale yellow. It is described as the only parrot to show altitudinal migration, descending to the valleys in winter, about the last week of October (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is usually seen in small flocks or family groups looking for fruit, nuts, seeds, nectar and acorns, and in Afghanistan it may nest in abandoned scaly-bellied woodpecker cavities. Females lay four or five eggs, incubated for about 23–24 days, and its typical lifespan is 15–17 years (Wikipedia, general species account).
