The yellow-breasted bunting is a stocky bunting, 14 to 16cm long and weighing 17 to 26g. Breeding males have brown upperparts, a black face and throat bar and black streaks on the flanks, and females have a heavily streaked grey-brown back and paler yellow underparts. Its call is a distinctive zick (Wikipedia, general species account).
It lives in open scrubby areas, dry rice fields and reedbeds, often near water, and nests on the ground with four to six eggs. It winters in large flocks in rice fields and grasslands, roosting in reedbeds, in South-east Asia and India, and the source shows a male photographed in Nepal. Pallas described it in 1773 (Wikipedia, general species account).
