The golden jackal is a small, slender wild dog. The coat varies from pale creamy yellow in summer to dark tawny beige in winter, with a mix of black, brown and white hairs on the back and lighter underparts. Shoulder height is 45 to 50cm. Genetic studies indicate the species expanded out of India around 20,000 years ago, near the end of the last glacial maximum (Wikipedia, general species account).
Jackals eat rodents, birds and fruit as well as carrion and other plant matter. In Tajikistan they dig lairs in long grass, shrubs and reed openings. Pups are born from late March to late April in Transcaucasia but can be born at any time of year in Nepal, according to the account opened. Little else about it in Nepal was found. Nationally Least Concern (Nepal National Red List 2011).
