The red fox is the largest of the true foxes and the most widely distributed member of the order Carnivora, found across the Northern Hemisphere. Despite its name, it often produces other colours, including leucistic and melanistic animals. Forty-five subspecies are currently recognised. It is agile, able to jump fences over 2m high, and swims well (Wikipedia, general species account).
It usually lives in pairs or small family groups, and the young of a mated pair may stay to help raise the next litter. It feeds primarily on small rodents but also takes rabbits, squirrels, game birds, reptiles, invertebrates, young hoofed animals, fruit and vegetables. Little has been written specifically about the species in Nepal in the sources opened here. Nationally Data Deficient (Nepal National Red List 2011).
