Basic stats

Range

Nepal, restricted to Madhesh province (first described from Bardiwas, Mahottari district)

Size

Fan-throated lizards (genus): males 37-47mm, females 36-52mm snout-vent length

The dark sitana, Sitana fusca, was described by Schleich and Kastle in 1998 from the Sitana sivalensis complex, from Bardiwas in Mahottari district. It is the largest of Nepal's three fan-throated lizards, though one source's figure of up to 8.2cm is probably a length including the tail. Males of the genus carry a dewlap (throat fan) used in breeding-season signalling; females lack it. They live on the ground and eat mainly insects but also molluscs and seeds (Wikipedia and Nepali news reports).

It is known only from its original description and appears to be restricted to Madhesh province in Nepal (Reptile Database; Nepali news reports).
